Nasser Al Khori, Generation Amazing Programmes Director, highlighted the achievements of the SC and Generation Amazing since 2010, as well as future plans to continue the legacy of the FIFA World Cup™ in Qatar and beyond. The event explored the crucial role that the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Sports Movement can play in advancing social and human development in a post-COVID-19 context.
During the event, Al Khori spoke about how football for development projects can be used as a tool for peace and diplomacy.
He said: “The World Cup gives Qatar the opportunity to connect the world through sport. It’s a chance for the world to come and see who we are and build bridges between nations and people, and to break down stereotypes.”
“Underpinned by the human development values expressed within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Qatar National Vision 2030, our aspiration to reach 1 million beneficiaries before the close of 2022 is within reach, as we drive mass participation in a wide variety of cultural and sporting activities,” he added.
Al Khori also visited the site of the Generation Amazing Community Club (GACC) at the Gitagata Rehabilitation Centre in Bugesera. Once open, the GACC will offer youth safe spaces to express their emotions and connect in positive ways, stimulating creative thinking and exploration, and improving their communication and decision-making skills. Generation Amazing is working with delivery partners in Rwanda and built a football pitch, basketball court and volleyball court, as well as developed the infrastructure at the Gitagata Rehabilitation Centre.
The centre’s new Generation Amazing pitch will see local coaches trained in football for development programming, along with the delivery of a targeted project for local youth. It will also direct football talent that may be spotted through the programme towards football academies. Generation Amazing’s programme delivery partners include Vision Youth Group Sports Academy, Vision Football Club, Dream Team Football Academy and Esperance Kigali Rwanda.
Generation Amazing is a human and social development initiative active in countries around the world, including Qatar, India, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Oman, Myanmar, Argentina, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, the Philippines, Rwanda and Uganda. It operates in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, promoting inclusion and gender equality in its football for development programme.
The programme's unique methodology teaches life skills, including communication, leadership, teamwork and organisation. It has built more than 35 football pitches in under-privileged communities, with those facilities now being turned into community clubs. Generation Amazing has positively impacted more than 750,000 people since its launch in 2010.
